Only France beats Italy when it comes to the number of Michelin-starred restaurants. There are well over 300 establishments serving food so inventive, delicious and coveted that they earn themselves a place in the hallowed guide. This year sees even more restaurants added to that list, with an incredible twenty-two new one stars, three new two stars and a new three-starred restaurant – Norbert Niederkofler’s incredible St. Hubertus in South Tyrol.
South Tyrol also welcomed a new two-star, as Matteo Mettulio’s La Siriola moved up the rankings, and the highly respected Culinaria Im Farmerkreuz in Bolzano gained its first star, securing this mountainous region’s reputation as home to some of the best food in Italy.
Our own Eugenio Boer achieved his first star at Essenza in Milan, a city which is also home to Vun, which received its second star, as well as Contraste and Trussardi alla Scala – two restaurants that were justly rewarded one star for their culinary offering.
Special awards went to Gambero in Brescia (Most Improved); Meo Modo in Siena (Best Front of House) and Stube Gourmet (Best Young Chef, awarded to Alessio Longhini), which was also awarded a star. The Best Female Chef award will be announced in three months.
Take a look at the full list of restaurants below and see why Italy is still one of the best places to eat in the world.
