At twenty-nine Lorenzo is the youngest Michelin-starred chef in Italy, receiving his first star in 2013 aged twenty-five. He is the third generation of chefs in his family and believes he has traditional Italian cooking in his blood. With El Coq, Lorenzo has moved past his rising star label and cemented his reputation as one of northern Italy’s most creative and exciting chefs. Originally based in the small town of Marano Vicentino, Lorenzo moved El Coq to the heart of Vicenza towards the end of 2016.
When it comes to cooking, Lorenzo’s style is firmly rooted in traditional Italian cuisine but also incorporates international influences from his extensive travels. This is seen with his love of open-flame grilling, an influence from his time in Spain working under Victor Arguinzoniz, regarded by many as a founding father of creative European barbecue. Visitors to El Coq have the choice of two tasting menus, one five-course and the other eight. Both menus have the option of wine pairings, chosen by El Coq’s experienced sommelier. Uniquely for a Michelin-starred restaurant, El Coq also offers cocktail pairings for courses on their tasting menu.
Inside the building, the decor is minimalist and tastefully simple. Exposed wooden beams line the ceiling, and a wallpaper covered in atmospheric silhouettes of trees dominate the walls. The elegant, white-linen covered tables are contrasted with modern metal chairs, and the bar is a focal point, meaning diners can watch the cocktails and drinks being prepared. When possible, Lorenzo likes to personally greet his guests and explain in detail his forward-thinking menu.
