As just one of a handful of Michelin-starred restaurants in the whole of Calabria, Dattilo is responsible for making sure the region’s culinary might is known across the rest of Italy. With chef Caterina Ceraudo at the helm, it’s become a must-visit for gastronomes visiting the area.
The restaurant has been open since the early 2000s and was well known even before Caterina took over in 2013, winning a spot in the Michelin guide in 2012. You certainly couldn’t ask for a more beautiful location – Dattilo is in the centre of the Ceraudo family farm, which utilises biodynamic farming methods to produce fruits, vegetables and oils. The actual restaurant is housed in a former mill, with beautiful exposed brickwork and a spacious, open dining room. Décor is kept simple, to allow the food to take centre stage.
Of course, being based in sunny Calabria means there’s ample opportunity to dine outside, and Dattilo’s many courtyards offer just that. The surrounding farmland and grounds in general are absolutely stunning – it’s well worth taking a stroll and soaking in the views either before or after a meal there.
The menu itself is full of choice. There are several tasting menus as well as an à la carte, and you can even choose to simply taste a plate of vegetables from the family farm. Caterina’s other love – wine – makes Dattilo’s list one of the most exciting in Italy. Be sure to try some from her father’s own vineyards if given the opportunity.
